Depression in the 21st century

Depression

There is so much horrid stigma surrounding mental illness such as depression and in the 21st century you'd think we would have more cop on!

One in five people will suffer from depression during their lifetime, and it is the leading cause of disability worldwide.  The good news is that depression is treatable.
There are 9 types of depression :

•Major Depression (Also known as Major Depressive Disorder, Chronic Major Depression or Unipolar depression)
•Dysthymia
•Bipolar disorder
•Persistent Depressive Disorder
•Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
•Psychotic Depression
•Postpartum Depression
•Substance Induced Mood Disorder (abuse or dependence)
•Comorbidity

Many people often feel sad or ‘depressed’ from time to time.  These feelings are usually don't last too long, and do not interfere with daily life.  Major Depressive Disorder, on the other hand, is a serious medical condition that affects the mind and body impacting more than 350 million people around the world.  It is an illness in the same way that diabetes, heart disease and cancer are and is not, as many people believe a bad attitude or 'all in the head'
The main difference between feeling sad, and Major Depressive Disorder, is time and duration.  If the following symptoms are persistent and last longer than two weeks, start to interfere with daily life, and are negatively impacting relationships, it may be Major Depressive Disorder and time to talk to a doctor.

Symptoms of Major Depression include:
* Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood most of the day, nearly every day, as indicated by subjective report or observation of others (e.g., appears tearful).  In children and adolescents, this may be characterized as an irritable mood.
* Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism
* Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
* Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
* Decreased energy, fatigue, being “slowed down”
* Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
* Trouble sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
* Appetite and/or weight changes
* Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
* Restlessness, irritability, and/or angry outbursts
* Persistent physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain, which do not respond to routine treatment

Depression is so misunderstood by so so many people and it's terrible to think that in this day and age people still think 'if you can't see it, it's not there'
Which is such a stupid, old fashioned way to think. all the studies and what not that we have these days people should realise that depression is a real illness that affects the brain.
Just because you can't see it does not mean it's not there! It should be and indication that we're thinking about it complete wrong! After the amount of both young and old people committing suicide you would think that people should cop on and realise that things they say as a 'joke' may not be taken as a joke by some and it may, not always but may be the reason they hurt themselves not always suicide but still it all matters!
Throughout the recession, media reports frequently spoke of Ireland’s suicide ‘epidemic’ as the number of people taking their own lives appeared to climb drastically. In 2015 the rate of suicide per 100,000 in the ROI was 10.5
I don't know the exact figures for this year but the amount of suicides has been absolutely horrific and heartbreaking.

It's easy for us to say 'oh suicide isn't the answer' but for many people they feel it's the only escape they have and that's so so horrible.
