One Woman's Fight To Legalise Medical Cannabis In Ireland

The fight for medical cannabis in Ireland

Vera Twomey an inspiration to us all, has done everything in her power to fight for her daughter Ava to have medical cannabis treatment in Ireland. Ava suffers from Dravets Syndrome, this causes atomic-clonic seizures which on certain occasions can turn so violent they have put her into cardiac arrest. Ava has undergone every form of epilepsy medication and treatment meaning she spends long periods of time in the hospital. Ava has had to be pulled out of school for periods of time to try the treatments which for any 5 year old is not something she wants. All she wants to do is be free from pain and suffering and play with her friends. Vera has walked 260km from her home in cork to the Daíl in Dublin to raise awareness and 20,000 in funds for the treatment.
The Health Committee has rejected the bill for medical cannabis even tho it's proven to help illnesses such as :
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Cancer
  • Crohn's disease
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia
  • Glaucoma
  • Schizophrenia
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Multiple sclerosis

These illnesses are life changing, and we should be doing everything in our power to use the cures that are natural rather than pumping the patients full of pills.
The fact that we are not using our resources to help them shows that our government are more interested in money than they are of the care and livelihood of their people.
This in my opinion is ridiculous, due to the large amount of people in Ireland smoking, growing and selling weed. In 2015 2.8 million worth of weed was seized in Cavan, if they could put this to good use instead of getting rid of it they would help millions. Of course because Ireland is more interested in investing money in stupid things like water meters when we have things of much more importance like the illnesses and the homeless crisis.

I was absolutely delighted when I heard that Vera and her family were taking Ava to Holland for her much needed treatment. It's heartbreaking however that Vera and her three other must leave Ava and her father in holland for the treatment while they go home.
Maybe one day our government will open their eyes and realise they could have saved so many people from so much pain by passing one simple law.
I hope that this treatment helps Ava to go through life without the pain and suffering she has been through for the last few years.
No one of any age should have to go through that suffering and no family should have to watch their loved ones going through it.

So to end this blog I'll say this Cannabis is helpful, close minded people need to try see the bigger picture and I hope that one day  my children or my children's children will be able to get the help they need without having to go to another country for it.

Thanks for reading,
